Curator’s Statement:
In honor of and collaboration with TEDx-Ogden, O1ARTS is pleased to announce X-hibition, opening May 17 at PLATFORMS, and running through the TEDxOgden Conference on June 16.
The ‘x” in TEDx signifies a locally-organized event, but an X can signify so much more, all of which apply to Ogden, its history and its people, and are reflected in the works by 8 local artists:
Indication of choice, as on a ballot
an unknown quantity or a variable
Power, magnification, leverage
a symbol of a kiss
a crossroad or junction
Experimental
Extra
Extraordinary
Map key symbol for a mountain
The union of two things
X marks the spot on a map, as in treasure
The issue of the deeper symbolism of the X, speaking to the crossroad, is the larger metaphor — here, the idea of the graphical device represents a place, it’s where people meet; it is the intersection — the center of the universe of communing and community; it could be the marketplace, the nexus… it is here… you might hold in your heart. The X is the four points of the cardinal direction, it’s the place where all points of the sphere of being can reach back to the centerpoint of the locus — the locality — of where you are.
